Sepsis Awareness

Also known as septicaemia or blood poisoning, sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's immune system overreacts to an infection. Instead of fighting the infection, the immune response causes widespread inflammation, leading to tissue damage, organ failure, and potentially death if not treated quickly.

Sepsis Awareness Training is an online course designed to educate health and social care professionals, first aiders, and other relevant staff on recognising and responding to sepsis. The training covers what sepsis is, its causes and symptoms, how to use the NEWS2 scoring system, and the appropriate actions to take if sepsis is suspected. Upon completion, learners receive a Sepsis Awareness Certificate.

Sepsis is triggered by an infection, which can be bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic. It most commonly develops from infections in the lungs (pneumonia), urinary tract (UTIs), abdomen (peritonitis), or skin (cellulitis). If an infection spreads or is not treated effectively, the immune system can become overwhelmed, leading to sepsis.

Sepsis symptoms can develop rapidly and may include:

• Slurred speech or confusion
• Extreme shivering or muscle pain
• Passing little or no urine (in a day)
• Severe breathlessness
• A feeling of impending doom
• Skin mottling, discolouration, or cold, clammy skin

In infants and young children, warning signs may include difficulty breathing, a weak cry, or excessive drowsiness.

The most common cause of sepsis is bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the lungs (pneumonia), urinary tract, abdomen, or bloodstream. However, viral and fungal infections can also lead to sepsis, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Sepsis progresses rapidly, and in severe cases, it can become fatal within hours to days if not treated promptly. Early detection and immediate medical intervention significantly increase the chances of survival.

Is sepsis contagious?

No, sepsis itself is not contagious. However, some underlying infections that can lead to sepsis, such as bacterial or viral infections, may be transmissible from person to person. Preventing infections through good hygiene, vaccinations, and prompt medical treatment can help reduce the risk of sepsis.
