FAQ - Consumer Rights Act

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions that are put to our specialists.

What is the consumer rights act 2015? The Consumer Right act aims to protect consumers against poor-quality products and unfair business practices or contract terms with regards to transactions, repairs, refunds and delivery. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives consumers a clear right to the repair or replacement of faulty digital content, such as online film and games, music downloads and e-books. The law here before had been unclear and this change has brought us up to date with how digital products have evolved.
How does the consumer rights act affect businesses?

If a business sells products, goods, and services, then its customers are protected by the Consumer Rights Act. As a retail shop, for example, you'll need to be aware of this law in case you sell something that's faulty or not fit for purpose.

If the goods sold by the trader don’t meet the requirements set out by the Consumer Rights Act (satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and matching the description), the consumer has a short period (usually 30 days) during which they can reject the goods.

The trader is obliged to give a refund within 14 days of agreeing that the consumer is entitled to one. The trader can ask the consumer to show proof of purchase, but this doesn’t have to be a receipt.

If the contract has been breached but the consumer has lost their right to reject goods because the 30 day period has passed, the trader is obliged to offer repair or replacement, as long as the complaint is made within six months of purchase.
